About the Pool
West Spreydon School Pool has been part of the local landscape for over 75 years and the vision remains to see local families enjoy being active and safe in the water over the summer. After a wide range of consultation with experts, locals and operators of equivalent pools, the pool committee believes it can be a well-used school facility and an affordable community hub for swim safety and enjoyment for all.
Improving Swim Safety
The Water Safety NZ is encourages school pools to stay open. “It is vital that Spreydon School does everything possible to retain its school pool and I encourage you to do everything possible to ensure that this outcome is reached”. As the number of local school pools has reduced the drowning statistics have increased. School pools onsite encourage increased swimming in and out of school hours. It is a place that has natural familiarity with local families and attracts use from those not likely to go to unfamiliar or less local pools.
A Community Hub
Whilst we benefit from the large aquatic facilities provided by the city council, the West Spreydon pool adds something special in terms of its capacity to be a hub for community life for the neighbourhood. It has enjoyed generations of local children participating and it is this kind of history and familiarity that breeds an environment that creates the village like community that raises children. Children that are confident in the water.
The Ultimate Goal
A pool that is secure, heated, covered, lined and with inviting surrounds. A pool managed by the community and not a financial millstone to the school. A pool set to serve the local community for another 30 years.
